Project title:
 Advanced control for bioreactors

Host organization: IMPERIAL
Supervisors: Prof. Athanasios Mantalaris (IMPERIAL), Dr. Ruth Misener (IMPERIAL), Prof. Alexander Mitsos (RWTH)
Duration: 36 months

Objectives: The ESR fellow will further develop the control strategy developed in IMPERIAL over the past decades based on offline parametric optimization for online optimal control. The basic premise of this methodology is to perform computationally expensive tasks offline when enough computational power and time is available; the problems solved online are then essentially not more expensive than a look-up table; this allows the solution of complex control problems. The ESR will then tailor the methodology to life sciences taking the model developed in the collaboration of ESR4 and ESR12 as a case study.

Expected results:

  • Methodology for online control via offline parametric control tailored to life sciences.
  • Systematically obtaining a set of reduced-order models and using multiparametric programming and on-line validation of the reduced models.
  • Demonstration and validation of the multiparametric Model Predictive Control (MPC) for bioreactors based on the monoclonal antibody GN-NS0 cell line.

Planned secondments:

  • RWTH, M10, 2 months, training in dynamic optimization
  • BAYER, M36, 1 month, training in biological processes
